Te Wairua O Aku Mahi
The Spirit Behind Our Practice
My creative work is not for self-promotion, but to honour those who have come before me. The wetsuits and dive gear we create are adorned with Māori motifs, chosen carefully for their whakapapa and the stories they carry, not for appearance alone. Every pattern, every seam, and every stitch is deliberate, meaningful, and sacred.
When we gather and prepare food from the ocean, we are guided continuously by Karakia (prayer), by the phases of the moon (maramataka), and by tikanga (customs). This process is much deeper than simply catching food; it involves careful preparation, offering, and cleaning, all performed with deep aroha (love).
Our weaving extends beyond art—it is a form of karanga (calling), inviting wāhine to reconnect with their essence, their power, and their identity.
The Poutangata Story
Born From Ancestral Breath
Poutangata is a kaupapa Māori freediving gear brand born from the depths of whakapapa and the primordial breath of Hinemoana. We are wāhine who dive not for sport, but for sustenance, reclamation, and spiritual connection.
The name itself, Poutangata, is a profound Māori term meaning "the pillar of the people." It is also traditionally associated with the ceremonial adze (toki poutangata), which symbolizes high rank, leadership, authoritativeness, and ultimate power. Poutangata gear is designed by and specifically for kaitiaki—guardians of the moana—who uphold ancient tikanga, harvest with humility and karakia, and deeply honour the rhythms of Papatūānuku (Earth Mother).
Each wetsuit, fin, and mask carries the sacred imprint of atua Māori, beautifully woven with the specific ancestral stories of Ngāti Maniapoto descent. Our designs reflect the sacred balance between gathering what we need and giving back to the source, strictly guided by kawa (protocol) and seasonal cycles.
Poutangata is not just gear—it’s a return to ancestral breath, a reclaiming of moana sovereignty, and an unapologetic celebration of wāhine toa.
“Poutangata is more than gear—it’s a calling. For every wāhine who dives, she becomes a guardian. A kaitiaki. A daughter of Tangaroa.”
Tikanga Based
Wāhine Moana Collectives
We are building a thriving community of like-minded wāhine who practice tikanga-based diving. Our goal is to connect with those who have been trained in traditional kai gathering, mātauranga o te moana (ocean knowledge), and the deep worship of atua wāhine like Hinemoana and Hine-te-iwaiwa.
To expand this network, we utilize trusted platforms such as Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, marae networks, and iwi environmental units. We deliberately collaborate with tohunga and kaumātua to guide our kaupapa, ensuring that everything we do aligns flawlessly with tikanga tuku iho (inherited traditions) and that our product storytelling remains completely authentic and safe.
